Sweitzer wins out, Bulldogs finish second at the Hurricane Fusillade Challenge
SMITHFIELD, R.I. – Spencer Sweitzer (Lunenburg, Mass.) came in one stroke under par, winning the Hurricane Fusillade Challenge with a two-round score of 143, as the senior led the Bryant University golf team to a second-place finish Saturday in Louisburg, N.C., in the team's first competition of 2012.
The Bulldogs carded a 602 as a team on the day, finishing just one stroke behind eventual winner Louisburg College, and saw their best round come in the early loop with a 299. Bryant would finish three strokes ahead of Louisburg's 306 in second-round action, but it wouldn't be enough for the Black and Gold to make up the difference as the hosts took the tournament title with an overall score of 601 (+25).
Individually, Sweitzer's first-place finish came on the back of a three-under-par first-round 69, the best score in the field of 21 golfers, and finished as the only golfer under par with a 143 (-1) in the one-day tournament. Sweitzer's 69 in the first lap gave the Bulldog leader a one-stroke advantage over Louisburg's Juan Fernandez, and Fernandez tied Sweitzer's 74 in the second to finish in second overall.
A trio of Bulldogs finished in the top 10, as Samuel Russell (Southampton, Mass.) placed sixth totaling a 150 (+6) for the day, while Brendan Allen (Chelmsford, Mass.) earned a tie for seventh with a two-round score of 154 (+10) and Grant Certuse (Mansfield, Mass.) finished knotted at 10th overall, improving in the second round by three strokes (155). Conor McGovern (Darien, Conn.) took 19th for the Black and Gold, carding a 167 (+23) for the day.
The Bulldogs continue their spring season April 5-7 when they take on the rest of the region's Division I squads in the New England DI Championships at Newport National Golf Club in Middletown, R.I.
